What does a Superintendent do in maritime and shipping?

A Superintendent is a key shore-based leader responsible for the safe, compliant and efficient operation of one vessel or a group of vessels. Superintendents act as the bridge between the ship and the office, supporting Masters, Chief Engineers and onboard teams while ensuring standards are met across maintenance, safety, performance and cost control.

The role is highly collaborative and often involves working with:

  • Masters, Chief Engineers and crew

  • Technical, crewing and HSSEQ teams

  • Class and flag representatives

  • Charterers and external inspectors (where applicable)

  • Ports, terminals, shipyards and contractors

Typical responsibilities in Superintendent roles

While the exact remit depends on employer and fleet, many Superintendent jobs include:

  • Acting as the primary shore contact for assigned vessels

  • Supporting safe operations and compliance with company procedures and regulations

  • Planning and overseeing maintenance, repairs and defect resolution

  • Managing technical/operational budgets and cost control

  • Coordinating shipyard periods, dry-docking and contractor performance

  • Preparing for and supporting inspections, audits and third-party requirements

  • Investigating incidents and ensuring corrective and preventative actions are implemented

  • Monitoring vessel performance and driving continuous improvement across the fleet
