Learn more about the Silverstream System

The Silverstream System sets a standard of proven clean technology without equal in the global shipping industry.

Silverstream's system has been independently verified in-operation to deliver fuel and emissions reductions of 5-10% net depending on vessel type.

Air lubrication fundamentally changes the interaction between water and a vessel’s hull, shearing air from air release units (ARUs) in the hull to create a uniform carpet of microbubbles that coats the full flat bottom of a vessel. As a result, frictional resistance is decreased – dramatically reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions.

The solution is highly effective, evidenced by the company's repeat orders from industry leaders including MSC, Shell, Carnival, Maersk, Grimaldi, Vale and others. The Silverstream System harnesses the power of both the air and the oceans – as well as naval engineering's most cutting-edge understanding of fluid dynamics – to deliver real, proven, measurable fuel and emissions savings for oceangoing vessels.

• Methane Patricia Camila

In 2020, Shell committed to a retrofit order of the Silverstream System onboard the 2010-constructed LNG carrier Methane Patricia Camila. This retrofit installation was the first of Silverstream’s growing pipeline of orders in the LNGC segment. Following operational testing of the retrofitted clean technology, Silverstream's and Shell’s engineers demonstrated 6.6% net savings generated by the Silverstream System.

• Eco Valencia & Grimaldi Group Ro-Ro Carriers

The 2018 installation on Eco Valencia was the first Silverstream System to be commissioned in a series of orders with Grimaldi Group. The system was installed on the Eco Valencia during its construction at the Chinese shipyard Jinling, located in Nanjing. Savings figures of 5.1% were measured during initial performance testing. The recorded savings exceeded initial predictions and showed that Grimaldi’s vision to install the Silverstream System as a fuel and emissions reduction solution paid off.

• Diamond Princess

In 2016, Carnival Corporation chose to retrofit the Silverstream System following an analysis of air lubrication technologies and Silverstream’s proven track record of delivering tangible reductions in fuel costs and emissions. Final contract trials demonstrated that the original performance expectations were exceeded with net efficiency improvements of over 5% at the design service speed, verified by Lloyd’s Register.
