Today, we sit down with Sasha Josri, Senior Recruitment Consultant in our Commercial Shipping Division based in Singapore, to delve into her remarkable career in recruitment.
When did your recruitment career begin?

It began in 2021 as a Regional Associate Consultant at a boutique French Executive Search firm. From day one, I have been immersed in executive search, specialising in C-suite roles across the Financial Services, Private Equity, and Venture Capital sectors, with additional exposure to the dynamic realms of technology and FMCG. This pivotal start laid the foundation for my passion and expertise in connecting top talent with transformative opportunities.

What inspired your decision to join Faststream over other recruitment agencies?

My decision was influenced by Faststream’s alignment with my values and background. Max Nicholas, our exceptional Senior Internal Recruiter, introduced me to the opportunity that matched my experience in mining and shipbroking. What set Faststream apart was its culture and leadership, especially the impression left by Founder and CEO Mark Charman during my final interview. Mark’s passion and approachability left a lasting impression on me. His visionary leadership and hands-on involvement in the company's operations resonated deeply with my values. Faststream’s collaborative culture and the chance to work under Mark’s guidance made joining the company an obvious choice.

Can you share pivotal moments from your career that have improved your skills as a recruitment consultant?

Several pivotal moments have significantly enhanced my skills as a recruitment consultant. One significant instance was when I successfully placed a candidate who seemed like a long shot at first. This taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of seeing potential beyond initial impressions.

Another pivotal moment was during a crucial negotiation with a leading shipping company where I successfully secured a contract at an exceptionally favourable rate, showcasing the tangible value that my expertise and our services at Faststream, bring to the table. This moment not only honed my negotiation skills but also reaffirmed my ability to forge impactful partnerships built on mutual trust and benefit.

What common misunderstandings do you believe exist regarding careers in recruitment?

One is that recruitment is solely about filling vacancies. In reality, it involves building relationships, understanding the aspirations of individuals, and guiding them towards fulfilling careers. Another misconception is that success in recruitment relies purely on sales tactics, whereas it’s truly about empathy, communication, and strategic problem-solving. I am committed to debunking these myths and showcasing recruitment as a profession driven by genuine human connections and the power to shape careers and organisations positively.

What skills do you believe it takes to be a successful recruitment consultant?

One must blend keen interpersonal skills with strategic thinking. Effective communication, empathy, and the ability to truly understand both client and candidate needs are paramount. Coupled with resilience, adaptability, and a knack for problem-solving, success in this dynamic field is not just about filling roles, but about forging lasting connections and driving mutual growth. It's about being a trusted advisor, a solution provider, and a catalyst for positive change in people's careers and companies' futures.

In what ways do you prioritise continuous learning and development to enhance your skills as a recruitment consultant?

I stay updated with industry trends and best practices through networking, conferences, and online resources. I enhance my skills by attending Faststream’s training sessions and workshops, focusing on candidate sourcing, interviewing, talent assessment, and AI best practices. Additionally, I value feedback and self-reflection for continuous improvement, which helps me grow as a consultant.

How do you maintain strong relationships with both clients and candidates throughout the recruitment process?

Strong relationships are crucial in recruitment. I use multiple channels. By deeply understanding their needs, I can provide tailored solutions. I aim to offer value beyond placements through insights, guidance, and support, which builds trust and loyalty. My commitment to these relationships fosters long-term partnerships based on mutual respect and shared success.

Reflecting on your journey, what stands as your most rewarding accomplishment?

Looking back, my most rewarding accomplishment is not just a single moment, but rather the collective impact I've had on individuals' lives. From guiding professionals toward fulfilling career paths to helping companies find the perfect fit for their teams, every success story I've been a part of fills me with immense pride. Knowing that I've played a role in someone's journey to success is what truly drives and inspires me every day.

What advice would you give to someone in their first year of recruitment?

Embrace learning with fervour. Be relentless in seeking knowledge about your industry, your candidates, and your clients. Cultivate resilience in the face of challenges, learn from setbacks, and celebrate every win, no matter how small. Never underestimate the power of building genuine relationships. Stay curious, stay adaptable, and never forget the impact you have in shaping careers and businesses.

What is the most valuable advice you have received from one of your peers?

Always prioritise building authentic relationships. My peer emphasised that genuine connections not only foster trust and collaboration but also pave the way for long-term success in recruitment. This advice has guided me to approach every interaction with empathy, transparency, and a sincere desire to understand and support others, ultimately leading to stronger partnerships and impactful placements.

Please can you paint a vivid picture of the atmosphere and culture at Faststream's Singapore Office?

The atmosphere is electric with a vibrant culture that fosters genuine connections and collaboration. Colleagues here aren't just teammates; they're friends who genuinely support one another. There's a palpable sense of unity as teams seamlessly work together, breaking down silos and ensuring nobody ever feels isolated. Personally, this environment fuels my motivation, making me eager to step into the office each day, ready to contribute and thrive alongside my incredible colleagues.

Amidst all your responsibilities, what aspect of your role and the company sparks your passion the most?

Undoubtedly, I have a strong affinity for interacting with others. I find genuine passion in the opportunity to continuously expand my network within the shipping and maritime industry. Every new connection represents a chance to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to our collective expertise. It's this dynamic process of building relationships and knowledge that truly ignites my enthusiasm for my role.

What milestones do you aim to conquer in the upcoming year, and how do you intend to achieve them?

I aim to become a leading expert in Dry Bulk shipping by expanding my industry knowledge and networking. I plan to double my client base, focusing on business development and client satisfaction. I’m also dedicated to exceeding my financial goals through strategic planning and exceptional performance. In the long term, I aspire to manage a team at Faststream, enhancing my leadership skills and driving collaborative success. My approach includes ongoing learning, active networking, target achievement, and leadership development. I’m eager to pursue these objectives with full commitment.
