At a pivotal time of saving our environment, my client has developed an emission reduction solution for the marine industry. Rotor Sails can reduce emissions by up to 30% and, with their patented Deployment Systems, be installed on most merchant vessels.
This is an exciting opportunity for an eager and enthusiastic PLC Programmer who is highly experienced with FDRs and can be responsible for developing the company's software for Rotor Sail control systems and performance reporting.
The Role-
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Programming and testing of Siemens PLC and HMI software for their Rotor Sail control products to achieve high quality, robust solutions which maximise their clients’ fuel savings.
- Design, test and deliver current and future control applications required for optimal operation and product improvement.
- Develop configurable product interfaces to a variety of on-board systems and machinery e.g. engine and power management systems.
- Manage software product configurations, design iterations and revision control for robust forwards and backwards compatibility to ensure ease of remote configuration and upgrades.
- Work with the Engineering Team to specify hardware and software platforms, protocols and interfaces that will provide long-term, widely compatible solutions resistant to obsolescence.
- Contribute to manuals and documentation to guide users and technicians through the setup, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the Rotor Sail control system and other software.
- Support the production team to resolve any technical issues during commissioning to ensure smooth product delivery.
- Attendance to vessels and/or production sites overseas will also be required from time to time, including climbing ladders to work on equipment.
Education and Qualifications:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Control Engineering, Software Engineering or other appropriate engineering discipline.
- Training in PLC programming (ideally Siemens).
- Proven track record of delivering successful software development projects.
- Experience of working in a Product Development Team following SQMS processes.
- Proven ability to understand engineering processes, write Functional Design Requirements and Specifications.
- 5+ years’ experience of Siemens HMI and PLC programming with TIA Portal.
- Good knowledge of Siemens hardware options.
- Experience of electric motor control using Variable Frequency Drives.
- In-depth knowledge of a wide range of instrumentation and monitoring systems and signal processing.
- Experience of working with 3rd party software and hardware suppliers including writing specifications, liaising with suppliers / subcontractors, testing and final approval of software.
- Understanding of modern commercial ship instrumentation and control systems.
- Experience commissioning and troubleshooting of software/control systems on ships or similar.
