Job Description

Opportunity for a Marine Engineer to join the market leader in clean marine technology.

Silverstream Technologies has successfully developed and deployed a market-leading clean marine technology solution over the last ten years – The Silverstream® System. Our Air Lubrication System (ALS) fundamentally changes the interaction between water and a vessel’s hull, creating a carpet of microbubbles that coats the flat bottom of a vessel. As a result, frictional resistance is reduced – dramatically improving a vessel’s fuel consumption and associated emissions.

The Role

The Marine Engineer is a key role that will provide subject matter expertise to the Silverstream Technologies business in the context of mechanical components and piping systems that are integral to the functioning of ALS. The primary function of the role will be to provide engineering support to the design and installation of ALS on new and existing vessels, as well as lead/assist projects aimed at developing first of Class system designs. You will also be involved in a wide range of activities from overseeing the specification of components and their interface at ship to managing the technical relationship with key OEMs, chief amongst which are compressor manufacturers. As Marine Engineer you may also be required to innovate, develop, test, and analyse solutions aimed at improving the performance and reducing the engineering cost of ALS.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Project Engineers by providing subject matter expertise on mechanical, HVAC and piping design/modifications for installation of ALS both as a Retrofit and as part of a Newbuild project.
  • Develop and maintain a suite of standard project deliverables that articulate the mechanical/piping elements of ALS installation.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of core product definition.
  • Carry out theoretical analysis using a range of thermodynamic equations to troubleshoot in-service behaviour or develop the ALS design.
  • Manage and support R&D activities aimed at improving ALS design and performance, through the following activities:
    • Develop business cases and analysis plans including cost-benefit analysis.
    • Write test procedures including specification of equipment required.
    • Co-ordinate and attend real-world testing onboard vessels.
    • Carry out data analysis and use findings to justify business decisions.
  • Co-ordinate and contribute to design review, HAZID, and FMEA meetings aimed at ensuring design changes are introduced and managed in a safe manner.
  • Act as technical focal point with key OEMs for mechanical components.
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications that enable cost effective solutions for all target vessels.
  • Develop and oversee functional testing of compressors and other key mechanical components.
  • Attendance at shipyards for assessment of installation progress and overseeing of system commissioning activities.
  • Present and share outcomes of engineering activities to the wider company and senior stakeholders.

Skills, Qualifications, Experience & Characteristics:

  • Higher Degree in Mechanical/Marine Engineering or a related subject or equivalent industry qualifications (Chief Engineer).
  • Chartered Engineering Status is desirable although not essential.
  • A clear and demonstratable understanding of marine air compressor design, operation and installation in a marine environment.
  • A clear and demonstratable understanding of marine piping systems and ability to calculate pipe system losses, pipe stresses, heat transfer and similar characteristics.
  • A clear and demonstratable understanding of marine HVAC systems and ability to calculate air flow needs.
  • Experience relating to the oversight and verification of mechanical works executed within a shipyard environment is desirable although not essential.
  • Conversant with AutoCAD and/or similar drafting packages. Some experience with 3D modelling (AutoCAD Inventor) is desirable although not essential.
  • Work well in a team and have the necessary communication (oral and written) skills to interface with other disciplines.
