Role Overview The Ship Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant technical management of a fleet of 4–5 vessels. This includes overseeing day‑to‑day operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing budgets, planning dry dockings, and maintaining strong engagement with shipboard staff and internal/external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities Vessel Operations & Compliance
- Ensure vessels operate safely in accordance with IMS procedures and all statutory, regulatory, and industry requirements.
- Monitor vessel performance, planned maintenance, and identify improvement opportunities.
- Implement changes relating to SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, Class, Flag State, Oil Majors, and other applicable regulations.
- Maintain vessel certificates and ensure compliance with Class and Oil Major standards.
- Conduct regular ship inspections and submit reports within the required timeframe.
- Arrange and coordinate repairs, dry docking, and supply of spare parts.
- Prepare dry dock specifications and manage tender processes.
- Investigate machinery failures and implement preventive actions to avoid recurrence.
- Liaise with Class, surveyors, suppliers, and other technical stakeholders.
- Manage vessel expenditure within approved budgets.
- Prepare annual budget proposals and financial reports.
- Advise stakeholders on budget variances and obtain approvals where necessary.
- Appraise onboard personnel on safety, technical performance, and environmental compliance.
- Identify training needs and work with crewing teams on personnel assignments.
- Ensure ship staff fully understand and follow company procedures and responsibilities.
- Work closely with internal departments including Commercial, Safety, Manning, and Accounts.
- Maintain strong relationships with external parties such as Owners, Charterers, Class societies, and suppliers.
- Coordinate with surveyors in the event of incidents.
- Ensure documentation is properly submitted to support insurance claims.
- Provide technical support throughout the claim process.
- Support company initiatives aligned with sustainability and industry best practices.
- Act as backup Ship Manager for colleagues during travel or leave.
- Carry out additional tasks or projects as assigned by senior management.
- Responsible for 4–5 vessels.
- Key areas of accountability include vessel safety, environmental performance, technical operations, budget control, dry docking execution, and continual readiness for vetting and PSC inspections.
- Managing budgets and cost control in a dynamic operational environment.
- Leading multicultural crews with varying levels of competency.
- Handling increasing workloads and vessel numbers through strong time management.
- Maintaining vessels to high industry standards (Oil Major, PSC, Class).
- Chief Engineer (Motor) Certificate of Competency.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or Naval Architecture.
- Minimum 1 year as Chief Engineer on Gas Carriers, including Ethylene vessels, or
- Minimum 1 year as Technical Superintendent / Ship Manager managing Gas Carriers (including Ethylene).
- Minimum 3 years as Second Engineer on Gas Carriers, including Ethylene vessels, or
- Minimum 3 years as Assistant Technical Superintendent / Ship Manager managing Gas Carriers (including Ethylene).
