We’re working with a well-established maritime insurer seeking a Senior Claims Handler to join its European Claims Team in London on a 1-year fixed-term contract. This is a senior technical role focused on managing complex maritime claims, advising Members on claims strategy, and ensuring the most effective resolution of disputes.

The organisation provides specialist insurance and claims support to shipowners worldwide and plays a central role within the global shipping industry. You will join a respected claims team and handle technically complex cases within an international environment. Responsible for delivering high-quality claims services, working closely with Members, legal counsel, correspondents, and internal teams to manage cases efficiently and strategically.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage allocated claims within agreed authority levels, ensuring compliance with internal claims handling procedures and departmental guidelines.
  • Assess risk and liability by collecting, analysing, and assimilating relevant information relating to maritime incidents and disputes.
  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations to Members on claims handling approaches to achieve cost-effective and timely resolutions.
  • Raise and manage claims estimates, process payments and reimbursements, and maintain financial oversight throughout the claims lifecycle.
  • Maintain regular reviews of claims files and estimates in accordance with company policies and reporting requirements.
  • Manage diary systems to ensure key dates, limitation periods, and time bars are monitored and met.
  • Handle FDD claims, including assessing coverage, determining whether cases should be supported, monitoring projected legal costs, and requesting budgetary approvals.
  • Liaise with the Team Leader and the FDD Deputy Director where issues arise in FDD matters.
  • Support internal knowledge management practices by sharing relevant claims insights and information with colleagues and other departments.
  • Maintain organised documentation across electronic and physical files to ensure accessibility, compliance, and business continuity standards.
  • Provide guidance, supervision, and training to colleagues and third parties where required.
  • Monitor Members’ claims performance and fleet development, providing insight to the Claims Team Leader, Underwriting Department, and other teams where appropriate.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Members, service providers, and key stakeholders through engagement and visits where required.
  • Attend internal and external training programmes and seminars to maintain technical expertise.
  • Collaborate closely with the Team Leader, Claims Handlers, FDD Deputy Director, and other departments across the organisation.
Skills & Experience
  • 3–5 years PQE (or equivalent professional experience) within maritime law, marine insurance, or a P&I Club environment.
  • Demonstrable FDD claims experience is essential.
  • Proven ability to manage complex claims files independently from notification through to resolution.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills when working with Members, lawyers, and service providers.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while meeting deadlines.
