Principal Surveyor (Passenger Ship Specialist)
 
Location: Southampton, UK | Department: Global Safety & Compliance
 
This is a high-impact role combining technical expertise, regulatory oversight, and global engagement. You'll shape safety standards, support vessel design certification, and conduct inspections and surveys worldwide.
 
The Role
  • Lead statutory surveys, audits, and inspections on passenger ships and superyachts.
  • Oversee plan approvals, certification, and compliance during design, construction, and operation.
  • Apply and enforce IMO, ILO, and international maritime regulations.
  • Provide expert advice to shipowners, shipyards, surveyors, and classification societies.
  • Prepare technical reports, certificates, and regulatory assessments.
  • Represent the registry in client and industry engagements.
  • Support business development and build strong international relationships.
What You Bring
  • Degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.
  • Extensive experience with a Classification Society or Maritime Administration.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with professional body membership.
  • Experience at sea / Flag State or regulatory roles.
  • Deep understanding of passenger ship and superyacht design, construction, and operations.
  • Knowledge of: IMO conventions and codes, Classification Society rules and survey processes, Port State Control and Flag State responsibilities and International maritime regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
