This is a senior, hands-on position suited to an experienced diesel or marine mechanic who enjoys leading from the front, delivering complex mechanical work, and mentoring teams across both workshop and site-based environments.
The Role
The Leading Hand Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for planning and executing mechanical jobs, supervising service staff, and ensuring all work is delivered safely, on time, and to a high standard.
The role involves a combination of workshop-based and offsite assignments, with a strong focus on medium and high-speed diesel engine overhauls, fault-finding, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and carry out major diesel engine overhauls, including full strip-downs and rebuilds
- Supervise and coordinate Service Mechanics on workshop and site jobs
- Act as first-line escalation for job delivery, quality, and safety matters
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and job scopes to allocate work effectively
- Provide cost estimates for labour, materials, and equipment
- Conduct pre-starts, toolbox talks, and daily operational reviews
- Ensure accurate job documentation and reporting
- Support operational leadership and deputise when required
- Promote a strong HSEQ culture and safe work practices
- Trade qualified: Certificate III / IV or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Proven experience with diesel engines, marine propulsion, or heavy mechanical equipment
- Demonstrated experience leading teams and managing concurrent jobs
- Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and time management skills
- Comfortable remaining hands-on while coordinating others
- Valid C Class Driver’s Licence, White Card
- Australian work rights preferred.
