Role Overview
The Vessel Manager is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-efficient technical management of 3–5 vessels. This role serves as the central point for all matters concerning assigned ships, ensuring full compliance with regulatory and company standards. The Vessel Manager maintains each vessel’s technical condition, machinery reliability, and energy efficiency within approved budgets.
Working closely with Operations and QHSE teams and supported by a Technical Officer or Purchaser, the Vessel Manager oversees maintenance planning, repairs, procurement, and reporting. The role also provides leadership and technical guidance to onboard teams and represents the company in dealings with owners, auditors, and third parties.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the technical operation of 3–5 vessels, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
- Plan and oversee maintenance and repair activities, including dry-dockings, surveys, and overhauls.
- Monitor vessel condition and performance, initiating corrective actions as needed.
- Conduct regular vessel inspections to assess technical condition and compliance.
- Prepare and manage vessel budgets, ensuring cost control and reporting variances.
- Coordinate procurement and logistics of spares, stores, and services.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and class survey requirements.
- Collaborate with terminals and commercial operators to maintain schedules.
- Support incident response and investigations, implementing preventive measures.
- Represent company interests in inspections and audits.
- Provide regular reporting on vessel condition, performance, and projects.
- Work closely with Operations and QHSE Managers to align priorities.
- Maintain strong relationships with onboard teams, offering guidance and leadership.
- Proven experience as a Vessel Manager or Technical Superintendent.
- Strong technical understanding of shipboard systems; Second Engineer (Class 2) CoC or higher preferred.
- Practical experience in RoRo or short-sea shipping operations.
- Familiarity with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, and other international conventions.
- Proficient in English with strong leadership and communication skills.
- Must have the right to work in the UK.
- Hands-on and agile, able to support during port calls, dry-dockings, and inspections.
- Willing and able to travel regularly, both domestically and internationally.
