Vessel Operations and Compliance
- Ensure vessels are operated efficiently and to the required standards, minimising downtime and protecting client assets.
- Maintain oversight of shipboard operations, maintenance standards, vessel condition, appearance and accommodation to meet client and company expectations.
- Act as the primary point of contact between vessels and shore-based teams.
- Audit the day-to-day technical operation of vessels under management.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to vessel personnel and company management.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory requirements relating to certification, safe manning, safety systems, machinery and equipment, with accurate records maintained.
- Liaise with classification societies, flag administrations and other regulatory bodies as required.
- Review monthly survey and operational reports, managing upcoming surveys, extensions and inspections in line with trading patterns and certification requirements.
- Respond to Safety Committee meeting actions and ensure follow-up where required.
- Monitor planned maintenance systems and vessel reporting, including logbooks and statutory returns.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of company procedures and manuals, and take a leading role in incident or casualty response when required.
- Carry out regular vessel visits, inspections and drills, providing detailed reports to the Fleet Manager, Senior Management and clients as appropriate.
- Conduct vessel audits in accordance with the company management system.
- Issue technical bulletins and maintain accurate documentation to support safe and efficient vessel operations.
- Ensure vessels are appropriately manned with competent and suitably experienced technical personnel.
- Coordinate and oversee the provision of operational services including port services, agents, bunkering, stores, surveys and contractors.
- Liaise closely with internal departments to ensure effective support to assigned vessels.
- Assist the Fleet Manager in preparing annual operating budgets within the technical scope of the role.
- Monitor vessel expenditure and ensure accurate monthly financial reporting.
- Prepare budgets and technical specifications for dry-docking and voyage repairs.
- Analyse quotations, support shipyard selection, and oversee scheduling, supervision and invoice settlement.
- Review and authorise quotations for spares, supplies and services within delegated authority, escalating exceptions as required.
- Support the preparation of insurance claims and related documentation.
- Interview Masters, Chief Engineers and senior officers during office visits and contribute to appraisal processes.
- Interview sea staff candidates within area of expertise when requested by the Personnel Department.
- Provide cover for the Fleet Manager during periods of absence or business travel.
- Occasional travel as required.
- Undertake other duties relevant to the position as reasonably requested.
- Certificate of competency to serve as at least Second Engineer or Chief Officer.
- Minimum two years’ sea service as part of a shipboard management team.
- At least one year’s shore-based experience within shipping company operations.
- Relevant DP vessel experience, either in a senior offshore role or technical onshore position.
- Strong knowledge of ISM, ISPS and MLC requirements.
- Sound understanding of vessel operations, safety systems and technical management.
- Proven financial awareness, including budgeting and cost control.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer-facing skills.
- Commercial awareness and professionalism.
- Unlimited Chief Engineer or Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2).
- Degree in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science or a related discipline.
- Previous sailing experience as Chief Engineer or Master.
