The Company:

At a pivotal time of saving our environment, my client has developed an emission reduction solution for the marine industry. Rotor Sails can reduce emissions by up to 30% and, with their patented Deployment Systems, be installed on most merchant vessels. Their mission is to help create a sustainable future for the shipping industry by rolling out this proven wind power technology across the global shipping fleet.

The Role: 

To manage the retrofit and new build integration of Rotor Sails onto merchant ships.

The typical end to end project duration is expected to be 7-14 months and depending on the stage in the project lifecycle, the PM could be managing multiple projects at a time. The role may require travel to China, typically c 1 month per project over the longer term.

My client has two UK offices- London and Southampton, they are open to candidates working from either base.

Main Duties and Responsibilities-

• Work with the sales team during the sales process to set customer expectations on project delivery and manage anticipated requirements.
• Upon contract signing, manage the handover from Sales to delivery, establishing the project team requirements and proactively addressing any necessary decisions and changes which have contractual impact with the customer and/or partners.
• Manage the internal and external/subcontract resources to meet their responsibilities for successful delivery through appropriate stages of each ship installation project on time, on budget and to their expected level of quality. Typically, the activity up to and including detailed design will be managed by this role.
• Responsible for the primary communication with the customer, ensure that the customer is kept fully up to date on all issues, personally managing issues with a commercial aspect and ensuring that the project team keeps the customer updated with technical matters.
• Liaise with the customer to keep the project plan up to date, managing risks, maintaining the risk register and ensuring that dates and timelines are accurate.
• Communicate with the production team in China to ensure that the project
requirements in terms of manufacture of rotor sails are met:
o Responsible for supporting with the successful delivery, installation
and commissioning on board, clarifying what is required and ensuring that any
re-planning is managed proactively, and that communication is clear and timely.
• Work with Finance Business Partner to manage project profitability and cash flows.
• Set up and manage all the necessary contracts with the customer, subcontractors, consultants, shipyard and Class to cover design, plan approval, fabrication, inspection and certification of the integration works for the ship (structural foundations, electrical system modifications, hydraulic system modifications, control & monitoring system connections).
• Deal with any issues that may arise, working with the team to resolve problems efficiently and effectively, keeping the customer updated as necessary to maximise satisfaction.

The Person: 

Project Management qualification
Degree-level educated, ideally in a discipline related to Project Management or Marine Engineering

Shipping/ Maritime background
Significant experience of working in shipyards, ideally as a Technical Superintendent for an owning company
Proven experience as a marine project manager having managed at least two end-to-end projects
Experience of managing multiple projects concurrently
Experience of multi-disciplinary engineering projects
Experience of retrofit – e.g. from marine sub-supply industry
Experience of managing transport and logistics
Previous experience of working in China
Experience of leading a process with Class
