GIS Assistant Technician
My client is a specialist publisher of marine training, reference and regulatory material for the shipping industry.
They are looking for a competent GIS user, with an interest in commercial maritime activities, to join a small team.
Although technical advice on product spec, maritime symbology and conventions will be provided, any existing knowledge, or experience of navigation at sea, would be a major advantage.
The position will be a unique opportunity for someone to familiarise themselves with the latest ESRI ArcGIS Pro software to produce simple and useful information products.
The GIS Assistant Technician will ensure their maritime information products are produced with accuracy, efficiency and maintained properly. The assistant technician will perform data capture, cartography, routine server management tasks, create custom base maps and manage data. The candidate must have the ability to meet challenging deadlines.
The company's navigational information products are used by major shipping operators, in the most challenging areas of navigation worldwide. The candidate will have good attention to detail and take personal responsibility for the accuracy of products. The candidate will have the attitude and skills required to help the company develop and improve their working practices, to ensure the timely and efficient supply of information to customers who operate in a high-risk environment.
-Basic cartography, derived manually from existing maps, called ENCs (Electronic Navigational Charts), which are licensed from Hydrographic Offices worldwide
-Production of maps and navigational diagrams for use in commercial maritime publications and websites
-Scheduled review and updating of maps and navigational diagrams
-Procurement, management and weekly updating of source data ENCs
-Management of Esri ArcGIS for Maritime server
-Assist in the creation of new products, as well as new editions of existing products
-Capture data, metadata and assist in the development of databases
-Follow and improve workflow processes and documentation
-Provide advice and support to other projects as required, and occasional support to remote access users &/or travel
-Create Basemaps and symbology as required
-Create feature classes, as required
-Submit notices of correction to National Hydrographic Offices when errors are found on source data
Desirable Skills or Knowledge
Familiarity with, or interest in, the following:
-Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap and / or QGIS
-An interest in learning SQL and / or Python
-Commercial maritime operations, particularly navigation
-IALA Maritime Buoyage
-Automatic Identification System data
-Use of Marine Traffic Pro
-Marine Spatial Planning, IMO routeing measures and Traffic Separation Schemes
-United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO / Admiralty) products
-S-63 and S-57 Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) and their symbology
-Use of Admiralty Digital List of Lights, and Admiralty Digital List of Radio Signals
-SQL and Python (basic level - ArcGIS Pro automates much of this)
-Interest in developing mapping products or diagrams for Marine Environmental Protection publications and guidance
-Knowledge or interest in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, the English Channel, Dover Strait and Southern North Sea, The Polar regions and other important areas of concentrated commercial maritime activity
-To have at least 1 years' GIS experience
