Finding a Maritime SaaS Sales Leader in Five Weeks

Client: European maritime technology business
Role: Head of Business Development
Recruitment Type: Retained and exclusive
Location: Remote Europe with international remit
Outcome: Employment contract signed in under five weeks
A fast-growing European maritime technology business providing an AI-enabled software platform to the global container shipping industry. Its technology supports more efficient container maintenance and repair decisions, helping operators reduce costs and improve operational performance.
The client approached Faststream through the company website and appointed the Marine Commercial Recruitment team on an exclusive retained basis following initial discussions about the requirement.

The Challenge

The business needed an experienced enterprise sales professional to personally develop and win strategic customers across the global container shipping market, with a particular focus on Europe and Asia.

The brief required a rare combination of enterprise SaaS and technology sales experience, deep container shipping knowledge, proven new-business capability, senior relationships within major global operators, international market experience, and the ability to succeed in a hands-on role within an entrepreneurial technology business.

The available talent pool was extremely limited. Candidates who were strong in one part of the brief often lacked another: experienced maritime sales professionals did not always bring SaaS expertise, enterprise software sellers often lacked relevant shipping relationships, and some senior commercial leaders had moved away from personally winning new business.

The client also needed someone able to add value quickly through an established international network. As interview feedback sharpened the brief towards candidates already close to senior stakeholders at major container shipping companies, the search became even more targeted.

Our solution

Faststream built a structured international search strategy around detailed qualification of the role, target-company mapping and direct headhunting across maritime SaaS, AI, container technology and shipping.

Candidates were assessed for personal new-business wins, enterprise technology sales capability, senior stakeholder engagement, knowledge of global container shipping, exposure to European and Asian markets, and suitability for an individual-contributor environment.

A quality-over-volume approach was maintained throughout. Only candidates closely aligned with the commercial, industry and cultural requirements were shortlisted, while regular client feedback was used to refine market mapping and outreach as the process progressed.

Candidate management and collaboration

The retained and exclusive model enabled close collaboration throughout the assignment. Faststream managed interview coordination, ongoing candidate engagement, references, offer discussions, contract support and resignation management.

The appointed candidate brought more than three decades of maritime experience, strong recent exposure to maritime technology and AI sales, and an established network of senior relationships across the container shipping market.

The Results

  • Employment contract signed in under five weeks from the role going live.

  • Appointment of a highly experienced maritime commercial professional with deep container shipping knowledge.

  • Established senior relationships across the global container shipping market, providing immediate commercial relevance.

  • Successful delivery of an international search across a highly specialist and constrained talent pool.

  • Candidate accepted the contract and successfully resigned from their existing position to join the client.

Impact of the hire

The appointment gives the client an experienced commercial professional who can use an existing industry network to open conversations with relevant decision-makers more quickly, support new customer acquisition and help progress enterprise opportunities across international markets.

The combination of maritime knowledge, technology sales experience and established sector relationships provides the business with additional capability to support its next phase of international growth.

Why Faststream

By appointing Faststream on an exclusive retained basis, the client benefited from a dedicated international search focused on a very limited specialist talent pool. Continuous market feedback improved the relevance of the shortlist, while the quality-over-volume approach reduced time spent reviewing unsuitable candidates.

The assignment was completed with the employment contract signed in under five weeks, demonstrating the value of a focused search methodology, specialist market knowledge and close client collaboration.
