Connecting the Right Leader with Korea’s Maritime Market

Client: A global company specialising in maritime, logistics and port operations services, with an established international presence
Role: Area Manager, Korea
Recruitment Type: Permanent Recruitment
Location: South Korea
Stakeholders Involved: Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and HR Business Partner
Faststream Recruitment partnered with a global maritime, logistics and port operations business to appoint an Area Manager for its South Korean operation. With a limited senior talent pool, a highly relationship-driven market and specific language and industry requirements, Faststream combined targeted search, specialist market knowledge and proactive networking to secure the right candidate within three months.

The Challenge

The client was looking to appoint an experienced Area Manager to help lead and develop its South Korean office.

The successful candidate needed to bring a combination of strong local market knowledge, established relationships within the shipping and maritime industry and experience gained within a relevant sector such as shipping, port operations or logistics.

Fluent English communication skills were also essential, with key international stakeholders based in Barcelona, Spain.

Finding an individual who met all these requirements presented several challenges.

South Korea has a highly connected and relationship-driven maritime market, and many experienced senior professionals are not actively looking for new opportunities or visible through traditional recruitment channels such as LinkedIn.

The available pool of candidates with the leadership experience, industry relationships and international communication skills required for the position was therefore relatively limited.

Faststream needed to reach beyond the active candidate market and identify professionals who had the right experience and credibility, even where they were not currently considering a career move.

The Solution

Faststream began the assignment with a detailed briefing session involving the client’s senior leadership and HR team.

This provided a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the role, the client’s ambitions for its South Korean business and the type of individual required to successfully lead and develop the operation.

With the profile established, Faststream launched a targeted search across the shipping, maritime, logistics and port operations sectors.

LinkedIn and traditional search methods formed part of the strategy, but Faststream recognised that these channels alone would not provide sufficient access to the senior talent available within the Korean market.

The recruitment consultant therefore leveraged Faststream’s specialist maritime network and existing industry relationships to identify and approach professionals who were not actively visible in the job market.

This combination of targeted search and relationship-led sourcing enabled Faststream to access a broader pool of relevant senior talent.

Candidates were carefully screened against both the technical requirements of the role and the wider qualities required to operate successfully within the client’s international business.

Those selected for interview received comprehensive preparation, including insight into the role, the organisation, the expectations of the senior leadership team and the key priorities of the appointment.

Following each interview, Faststream conducted detailed debriefs with both the client and candidate. This ensured feedback was captured quickly, concerns could be addressed, and the process continued to move efficiently towards the strongest candidate.

The Collaboration

Close communication with the client was central to the success of the assignment.

Faststream worked particularly closely with the Chief Operating Officer, who acted as the key hiring manager throughout the process.

Weekly progress updates provided visibility of the search, candidate activity and developments within the market, while regular conversations ensured the recruitment strategy remained aligned with the client’s expectations.

Faststream acted as a central point of contact between the senior leadership team and candidates throughout the recruitment process.

Support included:

  • Weekly search and progress updates

  • Candidate sourcing and screening

  • Interview preparation

  • Interview scheduling and coordination

  • Candidate and client feedback

  • Ongoing communication between all parties

  • Offer and remuneration management

This consistent communication helped maintain momentum throughout the assignment and enabled decisions to be made quickly once the right candidates had been identified.

The Results

Faststream successfully placed an Area Manager into the client’s South Korean operation within three months of taking the initial brief.

The recruitment brief was completed in May, a shortlist of qualified candidates was presented in June, and the successful candidate joined the business in August.

This was a strong outcome in a market where sourcing senior external talent can be particularly challenging.

The client was highly impressed with the quality of the candidates identified and presented, with both the CEO and COO providing positive feedback on the speed and efficiency of the recruitment process.

By combining specialist maritime market knowledge, targeted search and relationship-led candidate sourcing, Faststream was able to access senior professionals who may not have been reached through traditional recruitment channels.

The successful appointment provided the client with an experienced leader capable of developing its South Korean operation while bringing established industry relationships, local market understanding and the ability to work effectively with international stakeholders.

Why Faststream?

This assignment demonstrated the value of working with a specialist recruitment partner in a complex and relationship-driven talent market.

  • Access to hidden talent

Faststream used direct search and its specialist maritime network to identify experienced professionals who were not actively visible in the recruitment market.

  • Local market understanding

The search recognised the importance of professional relationships and market connections within South Korea, allowing the recruitment strategy to extend beyond traditional sourcing channels.

  • Targeted candidate selection

Candidates were assessed against leadership experience, sector knowledge, local relationships, communication skills and their ability to operate within an international business.

  • Efficient recruitment process

The successful candidate progressed from initial brief to joining the business within three months.

  • Candidate preparation

Candidates were fully briefed ahead of interviews, helping them understand the opportunity, expectations and priorities of the role.

  • End-to-end recruitment management
