As Marine Superintendent, you’ll ensure safe navigation, mooring, cargo and ballast operations, while supporting Masters and senior officers and providing expert operational guidance from the London office.
You’ll prepare operational responses for charterers and the commercial team, confirm vessel suitability for ports and terminals, attend vessels worldwide, and act as a key link between ship and shore across all aspects of marine operations.
Key responsibilities
- Implement the Company Safety Management System for navigation, cargo, ballast and marine operations.
- Review and respond to loading, discharge and tank-cleaning plans; supervise cargo operations when required.
- Monitor vessels’ movements daily and oversee navigational practices and mooring operations, advising as needed.
- Handle operational correspondence from vessels, Principals and charterers, ensuring timely follow-up.
- Respond to charterers’ operational queries, review cargo LOIs and advise Masters in consultation with Principals.
- Liaise with Fleet Personnel on deck officer appointments and review appraisals of deck personnel.
- Work with P&I Clubs on voyage returns, CLC renewals, non‑crew personnel issues, ice warranty and war risk matters.
- Interview, brief, de‑brief and appraise Masters and senior deck officers.
- Collaborate with the Engineer Superintendent on navigation instruments, mooring/anchoring equipment and cargo systems.
- Support wider ship operations, including maintenance, spares procurement, surveys and inspections.
- Arrange oil major and CDI inspections and coordinate responses to findings with Masters and the Fleet Team.
- Conduct and support risk assessments, accident/incident investigations and reporting.
- Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Master Mariner (Unlimited) or Chief Mate holding a Master Mariner’s licence.
- At least 2 years’ sea service on tanker vessels, ideally as a senior officer.
- Preferably 1–2 years’ shore-based experience in marine operations or superintendent role.
- Strong knowledge of tanker cargo systems; gas carrier experience is a plus.
- Excellent understanding of SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, IGC Code and OCIMF/SIGTTO guidelines.
- Experience with vetting inspections (SIRE/CDI) and terminal inspections.
- Fluent English, strong written and verbal communication skills, and sharp analytical ability.
- Proven team-working and time-management skills, with sound judgement under pressure.
- Willingness to travel overseas at short notice and a passport suitable for broad international travel.
- Good IT skills and general computer literacy.
