You will be a key technical authority on whether vessels, operators and terminals are safe and suitable to support the company’s global trading and production activities. You will work in a small, specialist team that vets thousands of vessels per year and supports major marine incidents and emergency response.
This is a high‑visibility role: you will interface with shipowners, managers and internal stakeholders at senior level and your decisions directly influence the company’s risk profile, commercial performance and reputation.
What you will do
- Provide marine assurance support and technical advice to multiple businesses within the group worldwide.
- Assess vessels and vessel managers for suitability to carry petrochemicals, oils, liquefied gases and dry bulk by sea and inland waterways.
- Assess offshore and project vessels for suitability, safety and compliance with relevant standards.
- Provide ship/shore interface assurance across a portfolio of marine terminals, ensuring safe mooring, loading and emergency preparedness.
- Conduct vessel inspections, owner audits and terminal assessments in line with industry good practice and internal standards.
- Respond to and lead on the marine aspects of port and terminal incidents as part of an on‑call rota.
- Support marine incident investigations, review operator reports and feed outcomes back into the vetting process.
- Promote safe marine operations and continuous improvement in standards across the business and among counterparties.
- Monitor industry developments and regulatory changes (IMO, OCIMF, SIGTTO, PIANC, etc.) and help shape future internal standards.
- Represent the company within relevant marine industry forums and working groups where required.
- Minimum 8 years’ seagoing experience, preferably as Master or Chief Engineer on oil, gas and/or chemical tankers.
- Thorough knowledge of LNG/LPG and ethane carriers, plus working knowledge of different engine types.
- Solid understanding of upstream marine assurance processes.
- Good working knowledge of inland barging and EU waterways.
- At least 2 years’ shore‑based experience in ship management or with an energy major.
- Expert operational, technical and safety knowledge of chemical, oil and gas tanker operations.
- Thorough marine engineering knowledge and good understanding of reliquefication systems.
- Advanced understanding of port operations, towage, dredging and interfaces with regulators.
- Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner or Chief Engineer).
- Excellent communication, influencing and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision and to plan workloads to meet agreed objectives.
- Resilience and robustness of character, able to uphold safety standards under commercial pressure.
- Strong team player with a can‑do attitude, able to contribute to demanding operational problem‑solving and listen to other ideas.
- Able to work flexibly in a 24‑hour marine operations environment, including out‑of‑hours work on an on‑call rota.
- Willing and able to travel extensively for meetings and inspections globally (circa 50% travel).
- Valid, unrestricted car‑driving licence for country of employment.
