We are working with a leading global tanker owner and operator to recruit a Junior Vessel Operator for their Houston team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious early-career professional to learn commercial vessel operations within a genuinely international shipping business.
You do not need to already be an experienced Vessel Operator. You could be a recent maritime or international business graduate, or have a couple of years' experience within shipping, maritime, energy, oil & gas, logistics, broking or another related commercial environment.
What is important is your potential.
We are looking for someone bright, commercially minded and naturally curious about international shipping, energy and world trade.
You should have a global outlook and an interest in what happens beyond the US market - someone who understands that shipping connects markets, ports and customers around the world and wants to learn more about how that works.
What will you learn?
Working alongside experienced commercial shipping professionals, you will develop your knowledge of the complete voyage lifecycle and gradually take responsibility for areas including:
- Planning and executing international tanker voyages
- Monitoring vessel movements, schedules and voyage performance
- Working with Masters, charterers, brokers, agents and terminals around the world
- Supporting chartering and commercial teams
- Understanding Charter Parties and voyage instructions
- Coordinating port calls, bunkers and vessel requirements
- Developing an understanding of freight, voyage economics and vessel P&L
- Supporting STS and lightering operations
- Learning about claims, demurrage and post-fixture activities
- Building relationships with customers and other international shipping stakeholders
You might be:
- A Maritime Business, Maritime Administration, International Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, Economics or similar graduate
- An Operations or Shipping Coordinator
- A Commercial or Shipping Analyst
- A Chartering or Broking Assistant
- Working within marine logistics, ports, terminals or ship agency
- An analyst, coordinator or scheduler within the oil & gas or energy sector
- Already working within vessel operations and looking to develop within international tanker shipping
More important is your ability to learn, solve problems, communicate confidently and understand the commercial implications of your decisions.
You will need to be interested in the wider world. An awareness of international geography, global trade, energy markets and shipping routes will be important, as will the curiosity to continually develop that knowledge.
Why consider this opportunity?
This isn't intended to be a role where you remain a coordinator.
You will be joining an experienced commercial operations team that can train you in international tanker operations and give you increasing responsibility as your knowledge develops.
For someone with the right aptitude and ambition, it offers the foundations for a long-term career in commercial shipping and future progression within a global tanker organization.
The position is based in Houston, Texas.
You must already have the right to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
