Faststream is partnering with a leading UK maritime transport operator to appoint a Director of Engineering, a critical leadership role at the heart of a fast-evolving, highly visible operation.
This is a rare opportunity to shape and lead the engineering strategy of a diverse and modernising fleet, while driving operational excellence across a 24/7 passenger transport environment.
The Opportunity
You will take full accountability for all engineering activity across the fleet leading a multi-disciplinary team through a period of growth, transformation, and investment.
The role sits on the senior leadership team and requires both strategic vision and hands-on operational leadership, ensuring the fleet remains safe, compliant, and delivering exceptional performance at all times.
With a number of innovative projects already underway this is a pivotal moment to join and make a lasting impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all engineering and technical functions across a complex, fast-paced fleet
- Drive operational reliability, safety, and compliance across vessels and infrastructure.
- Own engineering strategy, technical governance, and long-term fleet planning
- Lead and develop a team of engineers and specialists across multiple sites
- Deliver transformation, embedding structure, process, and continuous improvement culture
- Oversee major projects including fleet modernisation and maintenance capabilities
- Manage significant budgets, business cases, and supplier partnerships
- Act as a key escalation point during operational or technical incidents
The business has grown rapidly, and with that comes the need to:
- Introduce greater structure, consistency, and engineering governance
- Support the dry dock facility
- Strengthen processes, standards, and efficiency across engineering operations
- Build robust training, succession planning, and career development pathways
About You
We are seeking a senior engineering leader with:
- A strong marine engineering background
- Deep understanding of class, flag state and regulatory requirements
- Experience leading large engineering teams across multiple locations
- Proven ability to manage budgets, projects, and technical programmes
- Strong stakeholder management and supplier engagement experience
- The ability to operate both strategically and operationally
This role requires a confident and credible leader—someone who can challenge, inspire, and bring people with them on a journey of change.
Working Environment
- London-based role with regular travel between operational sites
- High visibility within the business and senior leadership team
- A 24/7 operation—flexibility and availability are essential
- Five days a week on-site, with some flexibility where needed
