Working closely with the Harbour Master and wider marine leadership team, you will play a key role in the day-to-day management of marine operations, regulatory compliance, emergency response and the future development of harbour services. You will also participate in a 1-in-4 Duty Harbour Master on-call rota, supporting the operational resilience of critical national infrastructure.
This role would suit an experienced Harbour Master, Deputy Harbour Master or Master Mariner with exceptional leadership capabilities who is looking to progress into a strategic, shore-based management position.
Responsibilities
- Lead the safe and efficient movement of commercial and leisure vessels within the port.
- Act as Duty Harbour Master, exercising delegated statutory authority and assuming full responsibility for harbour operations when required.
- Oversee vessel traffic management, berth planning and marine operations in collaboration with pilots, towage providers, terminals and other key stakeholders.
- Provide leadership during marine incidents, emergency response and pollution response activities.
- Ensure compliance with national and international maritime legislation, industry standards and port regulations.
- Lead investigations, produce reports and implement corrective actions to continuously improve marine safety and operational performance.
- Coach, mentor and develop operational teams, promoting a strong safety culture and high performance environment.
- Support strategic projects, operational improvements and long-term development initiatives across the harbour function.
- Build strong working relationships with regulators, emergency services, government agencies and internal departments.
- STCW II/2 Unlimited Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (or equivalent recognised for service within the Irish Mercantile Marine).
- Significant experience as a Ship's Master or within a Harbour Master or senior marine management team.
- Excellent knowledge of pilotage, ship handling, marine risk management and port operations.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams within a 24/7 operational environment.
- Strong understanding of maritime legislation, regulatory compliance and safety management.
- Experience conducting investigations, producing reports and implementing operational improvements.
- Outstanding communication, stakeholder engagement and decision-making skills.
- Previous shore-based marine management experience is desirable, although exceptional Masters looking to transition ashore will also be considered.
- Experience with safety management systems, audits and compliance frameworks would be advantageous.
